UNEMPLOYMENT

All Independent Contractors are encouraged to apply
for Montana Unemployment Insurance

The CARES Act creates “Pandemic Unemployment Assistance” to provide unemployment benefits to certain workers otherwise ineligible for unemployment benefits. The CARES Act permits an individual who is self-employed, an independent contractor, or a gig worker to receive unemployment benefits if the individual self-certifies that he or she is able and available to work within the meaning of applicable state law and is “unemployed, partially unemployed or unable or unavailable to work” because of one or more of the COVID-19–related reasons.

CARES Act FAQ

  • I am self-employed, do I need to file a claim online for unemployment
    • Yes, you are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits under new federal law, the CARES Act. You can now complete a regular unemployment claim online at MontanaWorks.gov. If you are new to this website, you will have to first create an account to file a new Unemployment Claim. If you have filed for unemployment in the past, you may be asked for a Security Word. Please be aware that Security Word used to be Mother’s Maiden Name on the previous website.
  • Do I need to apply to receive the additional $600 per week on my unemployment claim?
    • If you have already filed a claim that is in process or have filed a claim and are currently receiving benefits, you do not need to take any action to receive the additional $600 per week. The $600 will be added to your weekly benefit amount.
